The Nation Media Group (NMG) has been an integral part of Kenya’s public life for more than half a century. NMG was founded by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1959 to promote the interst of the African majority in the run-up to independence from colonial role in December 1963. Its first newspaper, The Nation rolled of the press on March 20, 1960 as the voice for the majority African population. Since its inception todate, NMG has become the largest private media in East and Central Africa with offices in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. Its headquarters are in Nairobi and it is listed in the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
Especially since 1990s, the NMG has witnessed dynamic expansion of its businesses and capital development, entered the broadcast as well as online market, and also turned its attention to its neighbours in Uganda and Tanzania.
NMG today has business in publication, printing and distribution of newspapers and magazines, radio and television broadcast, film, entertainment and digital online products in the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.
The Group’s brands in Kenya include, among others, The Daily Nation and its Sunday edition Sunday nation, Business Daily, The East African, Taifa Leo, Nation Television (NTV), QFM, Nation Hela, and Nation FM. Its brand in Uganda are the Daily Monitor, Nation Television Uganda (NTV Uganda), Sparks, and KFM, a Kampala based radio station. The Group’s brands in Tanzania are, among others, Mwananchi and The Citizen.
NMG’s commited early to high press standards: during the International Press institute general assembly in 1981, the Aga Khan called for responsible leadership, exchange of managerial, editor technical know-how and editorial expertise as a way to enhance the quality of journalism and promoted international exchange of journalists.
In 2018, eight leading newspaper columnists have resigned from Kenya's largest media group, citing a "loss in editorial independence". In a joint statement, they suggested the Kenyan government interfered in the Nation Media Group (NMG).

Executive Board Mother Company:
GROUP COMPANY SECRETARY. He was appointed in July 1998 and is the head of the Legal and Administration department. He is a director of the Group’s subsidiary companies. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is also a Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (CPS K) and a member of the Institute of Directors (Kenya). He is an alumni of the Cambridge University Advanced Leadership Programme.
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF. He was appointed on 5 June 2015. He is a member of the Editorial and the Strategy and Investments Committees. He worked for the Nation Media Group as a journalist rising to the position of Managing Editor of the Daily Nation before joining UNICEF as an editor in New York. He also served as UNICEF’s chief of communications in its Nigeria programme. He worked as the Chief Executive Officer of the Standard Media Group before taking up appointment as the Managing Director of Monitor Publications Limited and subsequently at Nation Newspapers division.
Group Human Resources Director. He joined NMG in March 2014. He has over 13 years’ experience in HR leadership and management in the East African region gained mainly from the manufacturing and financial services sectors. Prior to joining NMG, Mr. Kiambi worked with NIC Bank Group as the director, Human Resource from 2006 – 2014. Before that, he worked with BAT from 1994 – 2005 in several capacities as the Group human Resources Manager responsible for BAT Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Horn of Africa. He was additionally the Head of HR of Bat Kenya, factory Engineer and manufacturing Manager. Mr. Kiambi holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering, MBA – Employee Relations and professional certifications in various specialized areas in HR.
Managing Director Broadcast Division. He has previously held senior positions in African Media Group Limited (AMGL), Tanzania, TV Africa Kenya & Uganda, Sanyu Television, Uganda and Kenya Television Network (KTN), Kenya. He holds a Masters in Science from University of Liverpool. He joined the Group in 2018 from Aljazeera Media Group where he was the Head of Sales and Distribution, Sub Saharan Africa.
Group Head of Digital. She joined the Group on 15th January 2016 from HT Media India, where she was the Business Head and Publisher for their news websites. General Manager Circulation & Distribution. Mr. Walekwa is a Commercial Professional with over 17 years work experience. He has worked in key commercial roles with FMCG companies in the region rising to the level of Director with one of the global telecom companies, (Airtel), Road Masters cycles, as the Regional Marketing Manager for the great lakes region (East Africa & DRC/ Rwanda), Diageo (East African Breweries) as the Brand Manager and also as the divisional Sales Manager.
Group Financial Controller. Hejoined Nation Media Group in 1997 from Deloitte & Touch. He has since then worked as the Group Chief Accountant and the Group Internal Audit Manager before being promoted to Group Financial Controller in June 2008.

Managing Director Monitor Publications Limited. Has worked in various management roles in the media industry in South Africa and Uganda. From 2003 to mid - 2014, he was the Chief Commercial Officer at New Vision Printing and Publishing. He joined Monitor Publications in March 2015. He was also instrumental in setting up the Uganda Media Owners Association (UMOA) and served as the chairman for three years, until June 2014.

He joined NMG in January 2016 from British American Tobacco where he served in several senior roles in corporate and regulatory affairs responsible for various countries including Indian Ocean Islands (Mauritius, La Reunion, Comoros), Rwanda, Uganda, Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Somali/Somali Land, Eritrea, South Sudan and Djibouti) and Kenya. He has experience in trade bloc management with emphasis on WTO, EAC, COMESA & AU, regulatory affairs management including general and tax policy formulation, corporate communications, media, reputation and stakeholder management. Clifford is a lawyer by training.
Group Head of Production. Is a qualified mechanical engineer in 1995 having previously worked for Thomas De La Rue (K) LTD and East African Breweries Ltd. He is the Chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufactures, Machakos County Chapter.
GROUP HEAD OF INTERNAL AUDIT. Prior to being appointed the Group Head of Internal Audit, he was the Finance Manager at Mwananchi Communications Limited (NMG’s subsidiary in Tanzania), served as the Management Accountant at the Nation Couriers Division (NCD), the Revenue Accountant and Financial Accountant at NMG among other roles within the Finance Department.
Marketing Manager. She joined Nation Media Group in May 2013. She has over 15 years’ experience in Sales and Marketing, 10 of which have been in Brand and Marketing Management for leading brands in East Africa.
