TBC2

TBC2 is the ultimate fully fledged commercial media outlet of Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation (TBC).

According to the Tanzania Media Measurement report by GeoPoll, with audience statistics for quarter of 2, 2018, TBC2’s audience share is at XX.XXX%. This means it is ranked tenth among all news-focused TV stations.

According to Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation Establishment Order, 2007, TBC is mandated to have four types of media outlets namely public broadcasting services, commercial broadcasting services, community broadcasting services and such other broadcasting activities as the Minister responsible for Broadcasting may determine.

In a face-to-face interview (13/09/2018), the Director of Radio Services said that ultimately TBC is going to off-load commercials in TBC Taifa and TBC1, so that they can concentrate on broadcasting national development issues and events in reinforcing government efforts in nation-building. The Director of Radio Services said currently commercials in the two main media outlets are either cancelled or resheduled to uncontracted time thereby putting off advertisers from using the outlets. Meanwhile, content of TBC2 is more entertainment than commercial.

TBC2 belongs to Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, the only public broadcaster on Tanzania mainland. It is also a public corporation established under Section 4 of the Public Corporation Act, 1992 to provide public services broadcasting through radio and television. TBC is owned by the government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Treasury Registrar, a department within the Ministry of Finance and Planning that holds 100% shares. Consequently, the government uses it as its mouthpiece rather than to speak objectively and independently.
